Created in response to the climate crisis, BLEACHED is a short film that aims to raise awareness about coral and anemone bleaching, fostering a connection with these fragile marine ecosystems, and encouraging engagement with this critical issue.
BLEACHED documents the process of coral photographs captured in various aquariums undergoing bleaching, which involves the gradual loss of their colour. This visual representation illustrates how rising ocean temperatures, primarily driven by climate change, compel corals to expel the symbiotic algae living in their tissues, resulting in the loss of their vibrant hues. Such critical deprivation of symbiotic algae renders corals susceptible to starvation or debilitating weakness, making them vulnerable to harmful bacterial infections.
BLEACHED was awarded third place in the Art Partner #CreateCOP26 competition, which attracted coverage in notable publications such as Vogue and PAPER magazines. It has also been featured in several exhibitions, including BLEACHED by the Vulgar Earth Artists Collective at God's Tower in Southampton, ECO by SHIM Art Network at URSA Gallery in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and the Financial Times Global Gallery: COP26 Edition.
